What are detergents?
Detergents are organic compounds, which have both polar and non-polar characteristics. Detergents are of three types: anionic, cationic, and non-ionic. There are two kinds of detergents with different characteristics: phosphate detergents and surfactant detergents. Detergents that contain phosphates are highly caustic, and surfactant detergents are very toxic. The differences are that surfactant detergents are used to enhance the wetting, foaming, dispersing and emulsifying properties of detergents. Phosphate detergents are used in detergents to soften hard water and help suspend dirt in water.
What-is-Free-Detergents
Detergents are very widely used in both industrial and domestic premises like soaps and detergents to wash vehicles. High phosphate detergents such as tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) can be purchased at some paint and hardware stores. Regular cleaning with high phosphate detergents has proven to be effective in reducing lead dust. What occurs if detergents show up in freshwaters?
Detergents can have poisonous effects in all types of aquatic life if they are present in sufficient quantities, and this includes the biodegradable detergents. Most fish will die when detergent concentrations approach 15 parts per million. Detergent concentrations as low as 5 ppm will kill fish eggs. Surfactant detergents are implicated in decreasing the breeding ability of aquatic organisms.
Detergents also add another problem for aquatic life by lowering the surface tension of the water. A detergent concentration of only 2 ppm can cause fish to absorb double the amount of chemicals they would normally absorb, although that concentration itself is not high enough to affect fish directly.
Phosphates in detergents can lead to freshwater algal blooms that releases toxins and deplete oxygen in waterways.
What is free Detergents?
All laundry detergent and many “green” dishwasher detergent brands eliminated phosphates from their formulas years ago. But, mainstream dishwasher detergents were the last products to go this route because finding an alternative ingredient to phosphate that cleans well has been a challenge for manufacturers.
There have even been reports from the northwestern states (among the first to enact phosphate bans) of consumers driving across state lines just to stock up on the phosphate versions of their favorite brands. I remember the very same thing happening between New York and New Jersey when laundry detergents first went phosphate-free. But, as laundry detergent formulas improved, we stopped looking for phosphates and don’t miss them in our laundry products anymore.
Here are some tips that can help you get better results from the phosphate-free dishwasher detergents now on the market:
1. If your water’s hard (the likely cause of the white residue), add a 1/4 cup 20 Mule Team Borax to the bottom of your dishwasher before you start a cycle to help tie up water minerals and reduce spotting and filming.
2. If you’re using powder, try switching to gel or tablets for better results.
3. Make sure your rinse-agent dispenser is always full. Even in soft water, rinse agent is essential to help glasses and other items dry spot-free.
4. Don’t overload the machine. All items should be properly placed for good cleaning, rinsing, and drying.
5. Make sure your water is at least 120 degrees coming into the dishwasher. Run the water at the sink before starting the dishwasher to purge any cold water that may be in the line.
6. Don’t let food dry onto dishes. If you’re washing immediately, there’s no need to pre-rinse, but if you’re not, give them a quick rinse in the machine to remove food residue.
